Notice is hereby given that the annual meeting of the members of MUSEUM FOUNDATION OF THE PHILIPPINES, INC. will be held at the Tambunting Villonco Hall, National Museum, on July 31, 2008 at 3 p.m. The agenda of the meeting will be as follows:

1. Call to Order
2. Proof of Notice/Certification of Quorum
3. Approval of Minutes
4. Report of President
5. Election of Trustees
6. Amendment of Articles of Incorporation
7. Other Matters
8. Adjournment

Don\’t miss your last chance to see Cordillera Suite, featuring contemporary works by young Cordilleran artists Leonard Aguinaldo, Jojo Elmeda, Jordan Mang-osan, Rishab, and John Frank Sabado.

The tribute to National Artist for Visual Arts Benedicto \”Bencab\” Cabrera traces the inspiration Bencab drew from and gave to his adopted art community in the Cordilleras. Also on view are 13 highland-inspired paintings and etchings by the National Artist. Other items on display include Bencab\’s collection of lime containers which accompany Wig Tysmans\’ photographs of the collection as featured in the book Tabayag: Lime Containers of the Cordilleras.

Poetry in Function closes on January 16, Wednesday — visit soon and catch this intriguing exhibit before it\’s too late! The exhibit highlights 15 pieces of studio pottery by artist-potters Jaime de Guzman, Jon Pettyjohn, Lanelle Abueva-Fernando, Ugu Bigyan, and Hadrian Mendoza.

Created for functional use or for expressing artistic sensibility, the works of today\’s potters have evolved to sophisticated, elegant pieces that merge aesthetics and practicality. Poetry in Function is presented alongside Zhangzhou Ware Found in the Philippines and as part of the museum\’s Design as Art, Art as Design series.

THE WORLD IN PAINTING OPENS ON JAN. 23Cone Room, Bridgeway Gallery and Foyer
January 23 – February 13

Opening on January 23, The World in Painting showcases works by nine of Australia\’s leading painters: Gordon Bennett, Amanda Davies, Diene Georgetti, Raafat Ishak, Boxer Milner Tjampitjin, James Morrison, Clinton Nain, Nancy Naninurra Napanangka, and Lizzy Newman. The exhibit explores current modes of painting by a number of Australian artists, both urban and indigenous. The show also offers a perspective into how Australian artists from a range of generations and locations are painting their worlds.

The World in Painting is an Asialink/Heide Museum of Modern Art touring exhibit presented by the Australian Embassy Manila in celebration of Australia Day.

ZHANGZHOU WARE TALK & TOUR ON FEB. 9Cone Room
February 9, Saturday, 10:30 a.m.

Join Rita Tan, guest curator and President of The Oriental Ceramic Society of the Philippines, for a talk on the circumstances behind the creation of this sought-after ceramic. The unique traits of Zhangzhou ware will also be explored. Following the talk, Rita Tan will lead a special guided tour of the exhibit Zhangzhou Ware Found in the Philippines.

Rita Tan is an independent researcher on Chinese trade wares ranging from the 10th to 17th centuries. She is currently curating the Villanueva collection of Chinese and Southeast Asian trade wares at the Ayala Museum, and the Ceramic Gallery of Kaisa Heritage Center.

Zhangzhou ware was produced amidst a dramatic era in China: the 200-year trade ban of the Ming Dynasty was lifted, and European colonial powers looking for spices discovered the flourishing trade. As China\’s largest ceramic kilns catered to the new, affluent European market, smaller kilns—like those from the Zhangzhou district of Fujian province—supplemented the demand of loyal Asian customers.

Oct. 6, Sat – Cultural Study Tour: The Lake Towns Of Laguna with Ino Manalo. Laguna de Bay is one of the important heartlands of Tagalog culture. It is the largest lake in the Philippines which nurtures a necklace of towns rich traditional architecture, arts, rituals and food. A trip around the lake (whose name means, the lake of the mother) is a journey into some of the sacred and germinal spaces of Philippine culture.

Oct. 20, Sat – Cultural Study Tour: Kulinarya Tagala with Tina Decal. Journey through the southern Tagalog region with us! The whole day affair features a series of cooking demonstrations, artists’ studios, ancestral homes, churches and, of course, lots of food!

Aug. 25, Sat – Stories About Philippine Art: Obra Maestra Mamera by Dr. Roland Tolentino and Prof. Reuben. Dr Tolentino will discuss how art is made original or one-of-a-kind, how it transposes from the aesthetic to the commercial, anthropological, folk, kitsch and touristic. Prof Cañete, for his part, will delineate the development of an aesthetics of “mass sacralization” done by museums to address the shift of marketing focus from elite to mass audience.

Sept. 1, Sat – Culinary Tour: Pampanga Travelers who pass by Pampanga encounter all sorts of rice cakes, sweets, snacks and delicatessen. Don’t miss this cultural and culinary roadtrip to Pampanga, the culinary center of the Philippines!

Sept. 6, Thurs – Power, Palace and a Shot of Beer: A tour of Malacanang Palace and San Miguel Mansions with Ivan Man Dy. This deluxe walk includes a private tour inside the Malacañang Palace Museum as well as an excellent merienda at the Legarda Mansion.

Sept. 15, Sat – An Intimate Portrait of Juan Luna by Ambeth Ocampo. This National Hero celebrates his 150th birth anniversary this October. NCCA Chairman, author, and expert, Prof. Ambeth Ocampo, promises an interesting take on this National Hero. The talk will deal with Luna as an artist in the context of the emergence of the Filipino nation as well as his human side.

Spolarium A Juan Luna painting measuring 4.22 by 7.67 meters. It won the First Medal Award in the Madrid, Spain Exposition of 1884. The painting shows the Spoliarium of the Roman Coliseum where the dead gladiators were taken from the arena above. The Spolarium belongs to the National Museum Collection.

We’ll also stop by two artists’ studios: Carlito’s workshop (a brass sculptor) and Ugu Bigyan’s Pottery Studio. The trip is topped off with the Tagayan ritual and some souvenir shopping! Tagay na!

The Lopez Memorial Museum and the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Inc will hold a 3-day demonstration and workshop on art techniques at the National Museum. Included in the workshop is a short introduction on the work of the encarnador, background on history of decorative arts in the Philippines vis-à-vis Spain and Italy, and the encarnador technique translated into decoration for objects d’art. Writer-director Tats Manahan will facilitate the workshop.

Stories on Philippine Art: Uncovering the National Art Gallery

Museum Foundation of the Philippines and the Lopez Memorial Museum invite you to the third in our lecture series Stories on Philippine Art: Uncovering the National Art Gallery. Curator Patrick D. Flores will give us a private viewing and on-site lecture of the National Art Gallery which was closed since 2001. We will see seven galleries, including the \”Hall of Masters\” which exhibits two monumental masterpieces of the 19th century, namely Luna’s Spoliarium and Hidalgo’s La Tragedia del Gobernador Fernando de Bustamante y Bustillos

Meeting point: Lobby of the main building of the National Museum (the bldg with a gate across the Museum of the FIlpino People). Registration starts at 9:30am.

A Culinary Affair with Pia Lim-Castillo at Le Soufflé, Rockwell

Pia Lim-Castillo discusses the intricacies of the Filipino meal and how the land and seas as well as the history of colonization have affected our foodways from what it was before to what it is now. Despite the changes in foodways and habits, the underlying social importance of the meal will always be there. The luncheon menu will be prepared by Chef Jessie Sincioco.

Venue: Le Soufflé, Amorsolo West Bldg., Residential Drive, Rockwell Center.
