Feisty and widely-respected journalist Eugenia “Eggie” Apostol will talk about her experience as the most influential newspaper publisher of the past three decades and tireless advocate for press freedom on July 29, 2006 (Saturday) from 2 — 4pm at the Lopez Memorial Museum.
Apostol is one of the pioneers who wielded the power of print media and inspired women from all walks of life. When People Power broke out, she founded the opposition daily, the Philippine Daily Inquirer. During the Marcos regime, she published reports that could not come out in the Marcos-controlled media by establishing the bestselling Mr. & Ms. Special Edition that printed uncensored follow-up stories on the 1983 Aquino assassination. In 1999, in reaction to President Joseph Estrada’s attempts to clamp down on the press, she put out Pinoy Times.
Apostol graduated magna cum laude with the degree Bachelor of Literature in Journalism from the University of Santo Tomas. She started her career in journalism as women’s page editor of Sentinel, a national Catholic weekly. She became the women’s section editor of The Manila Times, Sunday Times Magazine and Manila Chronicle. She was president of the Manila Newspaperwomen’s Club in 1967 and a trustee of the Philippine Press Institute from 1987-1990.
WomanTalk with Apostol complements the exhibition, Babble, Bauble: Tweaking Femme, which is ongoing until September 15. The lecture and a tour of the exhibition is included in the Php120.00 fee. The Lopez Memorial Museum is at the ground floor, Benpres Building, Exchange Road corner Meralco Avenue, Pasig City. Museum days and hours are Mondays-Saturdays, 8am-5pm, except holidays.
